Yahoo Gives Update on Alliance with Microsoft
Share |

We haven't heard much about the long-awaited Microsoft-Yahoo Search Alliance in a while, but reminding everybody that the integration is still on the way, Yahoo posted an update today via its Search Marketing Blog.

The company says priority one is to make the transition to Microsoft's adCenter as smooth as possible, and that includes the following steps:

  • Microsoft and Yahoo Search Alliance - Before HolidaysProtect the holiday period – We know how important the holiday selling season is to many of you, so our aim is to complete the transition in the U.S. and Canada before the start of the 2010 holiday season.
  • Ensure a quality transition – If we determine that we cannot transition with quality before the holiday period, we’ll defer the transition until the early part of 2011.
  • Provide a window-of-time – To provide as much flexibility as possible, we intend to offer a window of several weeks in late summer, during which you can choose the time to initiate and complete your transition.

Yahoo will provide transition tools and send emails walking advertisers through the process when the time comes.

The Twitter backlash might be in full swing ? Ricky Gervais has branded it “undignified” and early adopters from Stephen Fry to Miley Cyrus are already quitting. But, undeterred, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has just opened his first account . Despite being so late to the party Gates has become an overnight Twitter sensation. So far he has focused on serious matters ? Haiti and the work of his charitable foundation. But the site's newest micro-blogger is learning fast ? by finding time to thank powerful celebrity tweeters Ashton Kutcher and Ryan Seacrest. Here are his tweets to far:

“Hello World.” Hard at work on my foundation letter

@RyanSeacrest: Just got a call from cnn. here are the final numbers raised from last nights show.. for unicef + american red cross $8 . . .

@TIME: We've assembled a list of sources tweeting live from Haiti ? follow it here: http://twitter.com/TIME/haiti

@RyanSeacrest ? thanks for your work on this, it will have a real impact for the people in Haiti who need it most.

@aplusk thanks to you and all the other people who have welcomed me. I've got a lot to learn about Twitter but look forward to sharing more.

And the verdict from his 222,232 plus followers?

@davidschneider: I'm slightly disappointed his first tweet wasn't “Windows 7 was my idea”.

@alyankovic: Glad @BillGates is finally on Twitter. It takes forever to get him on the phone for tech support.

@glinner: @billgates could you DM me? Got an idea that could make us both THOUSANDS.

@zoopedup: re Twitter down time earlier ? “As soon as @BillGates gets involved things start crashing.”

@Shamus_McClane: Hey @billgates, I/> [...]

Google Partners With Biggest Energy Monitor Manufacturer
Share |

The Google PowerMeter energy monitoring tool may be ready to go from interesting experiment to omnipresent product.  Google announced today that it's entered a partnership with Current Cost, the largest global supplier of real-time displays that monitor energy usage.

Neither organization is wasting time on paperwork or small-scale tests.  A post on the Official Google.org Blog explained, "Current Cost will now offer devices that are compatible with Google PowerMeter.  They will also offer upgrades to existing customers so that they too can monitor their energy consumption anywhere online with our software."

The post then continued, "Devices that integrate with Google PowerMeter will first be available in North America, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand."  Plus, "E.ON, one of the UK's largest utilities, has also teamed up with Current Cost to offer its customers a Google PowerMeter compatible energy monitor as part of its free 'Energy Fit Starter Pack.'"

These developments should put Google's name in front of a lot more people on a regular basis, acting as free advertising.  They constitute fantastic PR, too, considering that Google PowerMeter promises to help folks both go green and save money.

It'll be very interesting to see what sort of adoption rate the PowerMeter/Current Cost technology achieves in the weeks and months ahead.
